Rowing Regatta at Broadmeadow – A Great success!

October 23rd, 2011

Neala troop of Malahide placed 2nd at Sea Scout rowing regatta,Broadmeadow

116 Sea Scouts from across the County of Dublin  and North Wicklow took part in this years annual Sea Scout Rowing regatta held on Broadmeadow, Malahide on Sunday 23rd October. The regatta would normally take place in Dunlaoghaire in the month of September but had to be canceled three times due to high winds across the bay.

Broadmeadow is more use to having sail on the water for  regattas , but seven slick  east coast skiffs launched to begin the races. Crews prepared ,the course was set and the races began on time. Seven races took place over the one kilometer course. Crews of five including the coxswain instructions leaned hard and pulled strongly to the finishing line. Parents and friends lined to course and shouted their encouragement to row harder and faster.

Did this catch your eye?

September 29th, 2011

In last Saturday’s  Irish Independent  supplement  1950-1954 Rolling back the years has many interesting photo’s from around Ireland in the fifties. Well what caught our eye was a photo of Malahide Sea Scouts on board the  “The Lady Grania” opposite the Customs House on the River Liffey. The caption read members of the north Dublin troop pictured in 1959 modeling their new uniforms.

Malahide Sea Rangers of IGG on the "The Lady Grania" R.Liffey,Dublin Port 1959

The eight girls in the photo were all members of the Malahide Sea Rangers of  the Irish Girl Guide Association a section within IGG who developed  sea rangers in Dollymount (SRS Queen Elizabeth 2) , Dunlaoghaire, Bray , Ringsend ,Dodder,Howth and Malahide (The Lady Grania). The ranger’s named their sections after  naval and merchant ships.Correspondence between units and ships were encouraged and developed .

Unexpected cancellation!

September 15th, 2011

Making way in Dublin Bay

Unexpected cancellation of this years rowing regatta was not just once but three times. Whatever happened to when the students  go back to school in September the weather gets better? Our near centennial regatta has had its interruptions over the years since its beginnings in 1914.The years during both the First and Second World Wars , Sea Scouts went abroad as volunteers as able sea men ,  signalers and commissioned officers  in the Merchant and Royal Navy .

The high winds of recent days would make it impossible to get crews out on the water. All sections had been training and looking forward to the regatta. However the up and coming Long Distance Skiff Race  on Saturday 17th September is expected to get a start. Best of luck to the Malahide crews. Congratulations to the girls in the Neala troop who came third in the junior seamanship competition the Hamill Cup held recently in Howth.

The days for the assessment where fine with variable winds up to force 4 coming from an easterly direction . Spring tides were strong and proved a little difficulty when approaching “picking up a mark”  or carrying out “man-overboard drill” . Steering with out a rudder required all the skills of the coxswain’s .However all had trained hard and standard was good.

Training Day on River Liffey

On Saturday seven of our trainee instructors completed their Level 1 or Level 2 Irish Canoe Union assessment based on their ages. They all passed with flying colours and are now qualified to instruct on flat water from our Den. This is no small achievement with a four hour practical exam on the water, 25 hours logged over the summer and a whole host of other requirements achieved. Even better news is that 6 of the new instructors are from Malahide.

Tiarnan Byrne Wed, Adam Doyle Fri, Kevin Casey Fri, Joey Mc Carthy Fri, Rachael Barrett Neala & Alan Barrett Ventures. On 27th November four more are completing their instructor-ship with Chris Newman from Wed included in this assessment. The Sea Scout Regatta(formerly L.S.Albatross Regatta) had almost everything going for it when reading the weather forecast given last Wednesday.A big high developing over Scandinavia pushing away a  deepen low  off the South West of Ireland.

A brisk start!

The low was moving slowly but was dragging strong winds up from the Mediterranean given unseasonable temperatures. But who was complaining a 4.3 meter tide with an easterly increasing the level in Broadmeadows helped by the displacing waters in the inner estuary by works carried out on the ”Arches”.

A pleasant crossing with winds from the west at force 5 .

Later that evening 3 yachts and one motor launch with 17 watch leaders and scouts  slipped their moorings at Malahide and headed down the estuary on the evening tide in to the Irish Sea towards Rockabill.

By now darkness was setting in and not long off Rockabill a dim light in the North Eastern Horizon appeared .It was our direction and beacon to the Calf of Man. Wind picked up from the South West which made the sea lumpy. To continue and steady the roll engines were turned on and motor sailed through out the night . Fishing boats appear in the dark like lit up Christmas trees.

Light appeared in the sky with the coming of an early dawn .Visibility was now very poor with a thick fog covering our surrounds and the Isle of Man. Navigation was still possible with Sat Nav on the screen.

Back on the site the shore crew had erected tents and prepared the site for an early arrival of the boats crews .Heavy rain had prevented all tents up by the first night.

All boats now arrived off the Port of Peel and had to wait awhile ,while they called up on their VHF Channel 12 to gain access to Peels inner harbour , through the harbour gate.

The days on camp unfold with a new adventure everyday . Kayaking in the morning always followed by a swim. The off site activities rolled in  gorge walking , commando course ,archery and zip wire.
