Practical Advance & Intermediate Oars Charge Cert.Course

April 30th, 2012

The "Seal Watch"

It was hard work for the start of the Practical Oars Charge Cert training over the weekend. The “Seals Watch” began early on Saturday morning  from Malahide Marina. The constant North Easterly force six ,gusting seven made it difficult for coxswain and crews to navigate the exam course in Malahide’s lower estuary. The crew persisted and completed the early stages of the practical. Crew’s will return in a week or so time to do further training before full assessment.

Ciaran Casey and his watch of the Friday night troop came first place in the County Camping competition held over the weekend in Larchill Tirbradden,Co.Dublin. Ciaran led his watch over the weekend in a keenly contested competition. Marks were allocated for preparation, site build, menu, camp hygiene, camp craft and cooking.

The watch scored high in all areas. The judges souls and stomachs were melted by the watch’s dinner on Saturday night. Mellon sun surprise began as the starter, followed by a sweet and sour chicken dish with pillar rice  and of course the desert chocolate mountain log .All washed down with campers tea. Great stuff that earned his watch over 600 points and walk away with first place. Well done.

Barge quietly floats by on the Royal Canal

From the moment scouts arrived they were treated to light refreshments and a place on the Cusack stand to join in  the true scout spirit ,with entertainment by Christy McCann. Guests started to arrive. The Chief Scout  was welcomed by being  piped aboard by members of 8th Port Dunlaoghaire Sea Scouts (Fodhla). A minutes  silence was called for all past members of Sea Scouting and Scouting. Special remembrance for those who volunteered and went to sea during World War One and Two and for all souls lost at sea.May their souls rest in peace.

The formal part of the day began by assembling all scouts and leaders into the shape of the Scouts Fleur-de-Lys in the courtyard of the Cusack Stand. Line by line the scouts arrived and were filtered around the outside of the marked out shape on the cobble lock bricks. The photographer Sheldon Long is lifted forty foot into the sky  and snaps the now famous shaped photo. Easter on the Lower Estuary-Malahide

April 10th, 2012

Kayaking at "The Arches" Lower Estuary,Malahide

A good Easter on the estuary for canoeing. Nine of us paddled on the incoming tide on the inner estuary Saturday. This evening, Monday, Alan and I checked out the outgoing tide about three hours after high tide and it was definitely the biggest and fastest we have seen it. No chance of sitting on the wave to surf, you were either flung from one side of the wave to the other, or were washed down at 100mph. Great crack.
Hope to start back on the mid week canoeing this week by taking the Neala girls out on Wednesday, meeting at the Den at 6.15pm. All welcome to join, but Neala get priority on boats, equipment and instructors on Wednesdays. A gentle reintroduction session, we wont be going near the arches if they are flowing like they were this weekend.

Theory side of Oars Charge Cert Course concludes

March 24th, 2012

The theory side to this years Oars Charge Cert course concluded last Sunday night.Twenty three leaders, watch leaders and scouts sat through the hour or so written test.

23 leaders and scouts who recently took the written theory test for oars Charge Cert

In the Intermediate section questions ranged from safety equipment to choosing a safe anchorage, while in the Advance section from Navigation to Sailor talk. You might well ask what is sailor talk? Well it plays a big part in the symbolic framework of  sea scouting in Malahide. For example questions are asked to identify the different ranks on a ship from Skipper to Bosun. In addition know the areas on a ship and apply them to our land ship ( our den).

Questions on flag etiquette crossed into both papers. Most stumbled to explain what ‘The Heads’ are ? Do you know?

Unexpected cancellation!

September 15th, 2011

Making way in Dublin Bay

Unexpected cancellation of this years rowing regatta was not just once but three times. Whatever happened to when the students  go back to school in September the weather gets better? Our near centennial regatta has had its interruptions over the years since its beginnings in 1914.The years during both the First and Second World Wars , Sea Scouts went abroad as volunteers as able sea men ,  signalers and commissioned officers  in the Merchant and Royal Navy .

The high winds of recent days would make it impossible to get crews out on the water. All sections had been training and looking forward to the regatta. However the up and coming Long Distance Skiff Race  on Saturday 17th September is expected to get a start. Best of luck to the Malahide crews. Congratulations to the girls in the Neala troop who came third in the junior seamanship competition the Hamill Cup held recently in Howth.

The low was moving slowly but was dragging strong winds up from the Mediterranean given unseasonable temperatures. But who was complaining a 4.3 meter tide with an easterly increasing the level in Broadmeadows helped by the displacing waters in the inner estuary by works carried out on the ”Arches”.

Its journey began back in August 2009 in St. Andrews, Scotland at the graveside memorial service to Warington Baden Powell older brother of Robert and founder of Sea Scouting. Warington published Sea Scouting and Seamanship for boys in 1909 and a new branch of scouting developed rapidly through out Great Britain and Ireland initially and then throughout the world , known as Sea Scouting.

The flag has travelled over 25,000miles so far  since Summer of 2009 .It began its journey at the 100th Anniversary  Sea Scout Camp held in Nottingham , UK last summer and has travelled from England , Scotland, New Zealand , Council of South Pacific Scout Associations Conference ,Tonga, Fiji ,Hong Kong, USA, Finland , Spain , France  and now Ireland en-route to Eurosea 10 in the Czech Republic.

As Countries begin to celebrate their own centennial of Sea Scouting, a photo and a badge placed on the flag is all that is asked for ,and then it is sent onto the next country. It will continue its journey up to 1912 and probably several years beyond. It’s due back in Ireland in 1912 to celebrate our own Centennial. Although Sea Scouts were active in Ireland from 1910 onwards official registration was not till September 1912 as a Local Association.

Sea Scouting in “Laguna Veneto”

August 7th, 2010

By lorry , crossing two seas and transiting the alps takes four and half days from Dublin to Venice.

Planning the Route

Planning the Route

This weekend the Friday Scout section of the Malahide Sea Scout group of 37 have planned their route by air and coach to make the 2000 kilometer trip. The Expedition is planned in two halves.

The first several days will be camping on a island  in “Laguna Veneto” near the city of Venice . Here the scouts will enjoy the planned programme of  water activities, and hosteling on the island. The second half will be in a cooler region of “Fruili-Venezia Guila” near Pordenone were the programme  will cover hill walking, cycling, and other outdoor leisures.

In between there will be a sightseeing visit of  the City of Venice with an overnight in a Monastery.

In the groups history this would be the furtherest a whole section have travelled for annual expedition. The planning for this trip started twenty four months ago and in the last nine months has been very hectic to organise the route, camping sites, accommodation, hostel’s, The Monastery, passports, E111′s, travel insurance, permission to camp forms, flights, connecting transport, local transport , menus , buying food, cooking arrangements, programme and brushing up on the phrase book.

It’s a credit to the volunteer leaders who take on all these tasks as part of their efforts to make the expedition run a smooth as possible. The ongoing training is the life skills that scouting gives to those leaders and scouts for the future. The leadership team is Skipper Brian Cobbe, Donagh Farrell, Shane Flaherty, Edel Murray, Ellis Witcher,  James Doyle and  Rory O’Farrell.

Explorer Belt 2010 – Summer of 2010 in Belgium

July 23rd, 2010

24 years and 265 kilometres on are two very large figures in both time and distance. But that is what James Doyle of Friday Night Scouts and Venture Unit achieved in gaining his Explorer Belt last week.

Its 24 years since the last explorer belt was achieved in the group by Edward O’Donnell and Johnny Leonard. No problem to James who hiked over 265 kilometres and came out the other end with his award.

The expedition crossed three countries Netherlands , Belgium and finished in Wiltz, Luxembourg. James  trekked through the country side, visiting villages along the way and keeping a log his journey and experiences. In addition he had to attend to projects and live on a limited budget.

As James explains “you are  dropped off at a starting point given your tasks that need to complete within a tight time frame”

Well done to James on his achievement from all the members of Malahide Sea Scouts
