As part of the development of our water-activities programme at MSS the need for a new training course came about to facilitate the growth of members afloat and to maintain activities at a high standard of safety and quality on the water.
The course is based on the Scouting Ireland Charge Certificate training with the added inclusion of several Irish Sailing Association programmes including the ISA Assistant Instructor scheme.

This weekend participants led various sessions afloat for the first time and learned lots about session management and group control on the water.
Couple of aches and pains today after a full on practical weekend but we were very impressed with the level of personal skill and leadership displayed on the water.
A week off as we celebrate our Launch Day 2017 followed by another full weekend back on the water.
The wheels are now set in motion to create our next generation of potential instructors!

Thank you to our Boatmaster Colum, Deputy Boatmaster Jordan, Charge Certificate Instructor Kevin, National Water-Activities & Sea Scouting Team, ISA Instructors, and various past and present Troop Skippers and Scouters for giving their time generously to support the training and in particular to all the participants who have put a huge amount of commitment to the course which in total was 8 weeks shorebased plus two full weekends on the water all dedicated to getting their youth members safely afloat doing what Sea Scouts do best.

Several Ventures and Leaders completed the ISA Coastal Navigation for Small Boats this weekend at our temporary accommodation during our building work @Malahide Marina.
Participants learned how to read a nautical chart and worked through tide tables, magnetic bearings and position fixing (via plenty of coffee!) to be able to plot a safe course to steer.
We look forward to putting these skills into practice in the coming weeks are we start to launch the boats for 2016!

Volunteer Scouters from Malahide, Reachra County and surrounds at our last recent ‘Welcome to Scouting’

The last course of Welcome to Scouting in its present format came to an end on Thursday 4th February 2016 . Started back in the late nineties under our former association (Scout Association of Ireland) training scheme a  video of a  duration of about 45 minutes was shown too new potential volunteers. Given details about becoming a volunteer the video covered information about scouting and a schedule on further training .Narrated by Andrew Kelly of  communications in  SAI  was a well produced and gave potential volunteers a insight into the workings of scouting. The course was updated and became more interactive  when Scouting Ireland was formed back in 2004 ,but still retained the title ‘Welcome to Scouting’.

In the period of almost 20 years the training team of Malahide have trained  up to 320 volunteers into the 9th Port Malahide .When  the course was extended  to cover Reachra County and  surrounds a total of  920 volunteers have been trained . This is great credit to the training team in Malahide .Our thanks goes to Stephanie Mc Cann, Anna Hickey , Kevin Rowan ,Elaine Dunne, Stephen O’Reilly and of course to all those volunteers who turned up to the courses .
