Lir troop is the newest section in Malahide Sea Scout Group catering for the scouts aged 12 to 14 years and venture scouts aged 15 to 17+ years. Having just celebrated our 2nd birthday with appropriate cake and party food we set about to run a programme for 2019/20 to be on of Fun, Challenge and Adventure.
Our programme for the year would range from water activities to camping to hostelling to hiking. Training and preparing ourselves for each of these activities commenced during the spring.
Our annual camp for 2019 was held in Clonbur, Co. Galway. Our destination was Petersburg Outdoor Education Centre, a happening place located on the banks of Lough Mask. We spent our time under canvas learning to live and work together with the challenges that camping present. Our programme included kayaking, powerboating, hiking, swimming and a certification in a Leave no Trace programme.
Lir Scouts enjoy their time in Scouting even when resorting to online meetings during the height of the pandemic. Our achievement for 2020 was our virtual Hike for Hope. Each scout hiked up their stairs 186 times over the weekend with our final destination being Mount Everest, climbing a height of 8,848 meters or 3,160 flights of stairs. In doing this we also raised much needed funds for Pieta House.
We look forward to the years ahead as we face the challenge of activities in the new normal.
