What do Sea Scouts do during the Winter Months
Sea Scouts have a busy season during the summer months going afloat. So what do they do during the dark and winter evenings? Indoor programme takes place with hill walking and short camping at the weekends. More important are the preparation of boats for the coming boating season.
Boats are taking out by the previous October. They are immediately hosed down and cleaned out. Oars, oarlocks, lines, stretchers, rudder are taken indoors for any minor repairs and lightly sanded for varnishing. The boats themselves will be placed upside down and covered with a tarpaulin. A pole or two maybe placed inside the tarpaulin to keep the air circulating around the boat.
In turn they are then brought indoors to be further cleaned out, sanded down, make repairs, and prepare for varnishing and anti fouled.
Timing is important to get them ready in time for the coming season. When ready an inspection is carried out by an independent qualified person to have them certified and ready for launching.
A day is set by the end of April to Launch.
