
Master Mariner Seamanship Competition – 2014
Held today in Ringsend , Dublin at 1st Port of Dublin Sea Scout hut was the Desmond Fortune Memorial Trophy – Master Mariner – 2014
The Master Mariner competition covers a very wide syllabus that includes rowing, water safety, sea traditions, rope work, parts of craft, anchoring, boat maintenance, communications, steering rules and lights, meteorology, navigation and buoyage. This is an individual challenge that each entrant is expected to show a level of knowledge in all of the above and that they have undertaken a high level of training.
It is a credit to all who enter to their dedication to improve their nautical skills. This year’s ,1st place went to Thomas Moore of 5th Port Dollymount Sea Scouts and in 2nd place Paul Dawson of 9th Port Malahide Sea Scouts (Friday Troop) and in 3rd place Odhrán McDonnell 8th Port Dunlaoghaire Sea Scouts.
Also congratulation to Heather Murphy of the Malahide Neala troop who also took part in today’s competition. Heather was the only scout who took part this year, in all 3 seamanship competitions and was placed as part of a team 1st in the Captain Hamill Cup, 1st in the Grainne Lavelle rowing trophy and 2nd in the Sir William Fry Cup.
Our thanks goes to the many Instructors who gave their time voluntary today including Captain Brian Mc Kenna, Captain Martin O Treasaigh, Liam Ball ,Tommy Taylor, Gerry Taylor , Keelin Murphy,and Ciaran Bradshaw. Finally to the organsing team Steven Cull , Kate O’Farrell,Stephanie Mc Cann,and James Doyle.
