Wednesday ‘Ski’ Scouts – Trip to Kiltiernan

After an unintentional 4 year hiatus (GASPS!), the Wednesday Troop Ski Trip returned with a bang on Saturday 28th of Feb!!

A team of 32 scouts assembled at Malahide Train Station at 7.15am on Saturday morning (a time they are well accustomed at this stage for hiking!!) to catch a train to Dublin Connolly. The number 44 bus brought the group the remainder of the journey from O’Connell Street to the Ski Club of Ireland, located in Kilternan, South County Dublin.

Established in 1963, the Ski club of Ireland recently celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2014. It currently owns and runs the only artificial ski slope in the Republic of Ireland.

The Wednesday lads on the beginner slope skiing on ‘Snowplex’

The Ski club opens for the ski season between September and April. The club offers skiing/snowboarding on beginner, intermediate, and advanced slopes with classes for all levels.

The Wednesday Troop arrived at 10am and got suited and booted for their 1hr 30min lesson at 11am.

Each scout had a ski adjustment form which included information such as their height, weight and shoe size. This was necessary in order for the skis to fit and automatically ‘spring off’ should an awkward fall occur.

The scouts had to side step up the slope initially…

The Troop had 26 beginners and 6 advanced skiers on the day.

The scouts made great progress learning the basics and all really enjoyed the experience. Afterward the scouts suggested that the troop make more frequent visits next season to allow progression of technique and to move to the more advanced slopes.

Our advanced Skiers (and snowboarder) at the ready!

The standard stop off at Mr. McDonald and Mr. King was in order on the route home. All arrived back just before 5pm. Long day but most definitely worth it!

Who knows..maybe in the future, after some practice at Kilternan, the Wednesday Troop could organise a Trip to some real snow!!
