powerboating leader training
If you would like to learn how to drive a powerboat, Colum our boatmaster usually runs a number of ISA powerboating courses between autumn and spring. From your perspective, this is a great way to develop your powerboating skills and on the water leadership. For the Group it is the primary means through which we develop and maintain a core of qualified instructors and ventures/adult leaders that can provide support. In order to take Beavers, Cubs or Scouts out sailing we need a number of qualified powerboat drivers (National Powerboat Certificate) out on the water providing support.
Powerboating courses are designed for all levels, whether you have never driven a powerboat before or are well versed in their handling. The most popular courses run by MSS are the following:
Introduction to Powerboating (old level 1) – introduction to boat handling and safety. This course is one day long, half theory sessions and half practical training on the water. This allows you out in a powerboat to practice once you have someone with a National Powerboat Certificate (NPC) in the boat with you. Once you have 9 hours experience logged you can then go onto complete the NPC.
National Powerboating Certificate (old level 2) gives you the skills and knowledge necessary to skipper a powerboat. This course is run over a weekend with most of the time spent learning practical skills on the water. Once you have 20 hours logged you can go on to complete the Safety Boat Certificate (SBC).
Safety Boat Certificate (old level 3) provides you with more advanced safety skills (e.g. providing safety cover for racing fleets).
If you are interested in completing any of the above contact Colum, the boatmaster at sailing@malahideseascouts.ie for details or take a look at our invaluable Boatmasters section which includes lots of other resources for getting out on the water, including the Boating Calender and a Boat Training Resource section (which includes much more information on powerboating).
