On Saturday 18th August 2012 seeing the official opening of Scouting Ireland’s new camping and activity centre Castle Saunderson a labour of love over a fifteen year period by members in Scouting. With help and aid from Cavan County Council and an input from Northern Ireland Executive saw this fine Scouting amenity open on Saturday.
An open invitation was sent out to all scout groups and six members from Malahide Sea Scout attended on behalf of the group. It was an early start for the Malahide team as official proceedings commenced at 10.30am followed by the official opening by President Michael.D.Higgins.
The site is on the borders of County Cavan and Fermanagh with two main entrances one from the North and the other from the South. Here the River Finn meanders and passes by the site and makes it an attractive amenity for sailing and kayaking. The indoor accommodation sleeps up to 44 persons and has a full self-catering kitchen. Should the weather turn bad for campers a large indoor dry area is available to accommodate all. Outside on the thirty acre site fully serviced toilet and shower blocks are situated in the camping fields. Here also the surrounding forests make excellent trekking and for overnight bivying
