The 99th Sea Scout Rowing Regatta on Broadmeadow Malahide

After postponing this year’s Rowing Regatta at Dunlaoghaire by one week due to high winds on Dublin Bay the rescheduled event attracted over 200 Sea Scout’s to Broadmeadow, Malahides Upper Estuary on Saturday 14^th September 2013. The well attended event had both kayakers and oarsmen partake in races from under 13 to under 18’s.The East Coast Skiff races were over a course of one kilometre. Heats were run for the younger age sections while the prestigious under 17 race the Woodlatimer cup had seven teams.

The day at Broadmeadow did not let us down with light winds up to force 3. Crews and spectators enjoyed the calm conditions that gave very lively races with close finishes. Families and friends cheered on the boats crews as they raced the one kilometre course. The day’s events ended with presentations on the green on Lower Texas lane overlooking Broadmeadow. Kevin Rowan of the Sea Scout and Water Activities team presented to the crews medals and trophies for first, second and third place.

Congratulations to the organisers Gearoid O’Riain, Harry O’Rahilly and their crew from 8U Calafort Dunlaoghaire, who organised the days event and to Malahide Sea Scout group for stepping in at the last moment to provide the venue and set up. This was the 99^th year in the events history which makes it the oldest scout competition in the World. We are now looking forward to the races centenary in 2014.
