Commissioner 1st conference 16-18th Mar1917 MatlockBath,DerbyshireAt the 1st Conference of Scout Commissioners held on the 16-18th March 1917 in Matlock Bath Derbyshire, Robert Baden-Powell had on the agenda to establish a training scheme for Scout Leaders. This he called the Woodbadge Trail and to this very day is still undertaken by leaders. Mr.John Ross Sea Scout Commissioner of the Port of Dublin Sea Scouts Local Association attended that first conference .John  from Howth died a year later under tragic circumstances in October 1918 on the RMS Leinster which was sunk by a U-Boat off the Kish Bank while making way to HolyheadScouters Alan Johns, Greg Boyd (Provincial Coordinator),Elaine Dunne and Pat Moyne on been awarded Woodbeads

To our credit, Malahide leaders have a great record attaining the Woodbadge. The present course is attained after completing 6 stages of the training scheme .The first step is called Welcome to scouting which gives an introduction to Scouting, its aim, about your commitment, responsibility, and role. The training continues as a progressive scheme, and also plots the leader’s personal progression. Over the period of training, hard and soft skills are taught. The volunteer leader is given the confidence and knowledge to run an exciting, challenging and fun programme to the youth in his care.

I would like to congratulate and commend, Pat Moyne (Sat. Beavers), Elaine Dunne (Tues.Cubs) ,and Alan Johns (Tues. Cubs) on completing their Woodbadge trail. The 3 leaders were presented their Woodbeads at a recent ceremony in the Malahide Sea Scout Den by Mr.Greg Boyd Provincial Training Coordinator for Scouting Irelands North East Provenience.
