Alan & Tiarnan Paddle Stupidly-Far for Charity
Two Malahide Leaders are putting themselves to the ultimate test in what has been dubbed the “Worlds Toughest Canoe Race”.
Devizes to Westminster – 125 km
The ultimate endurance test.
125 km of gruelling waterways to negotiate including locks, weirs, weather, dark nights, tide and wildlife.
To top it off the race is done in a tandem canoe so teamwork is critical to avoid capsizing.
Competitors typically spend well over 20 hours sitting in their boats non-stop paddling. They will have opportunities to pull over for a break during the race but risk being overtaken by other teams. Forward planning, mind-over-matter and river knowledge are all essential to help teams finish.
It certainly is not easy, often 1/3 of teams will retire before the end.
Back in 2003 two Malahide Leaders (Paul Tyrell & Andy O’Connell) came an amazing 12th out 52 and finished at just under 24 hours.
Who is crazy enough to put themselves through this?
None other than our very own Malahide men, Alan Barrett and Tiarnan Byrne.
You guys are hardcore! We wish you the very best of luck.
What makes it all worthwhile is the lads are collecting every penny they raise and donating it to charity.
The charities they have chosen to support are Diabetes Ireland to help continued research and support to 200,000 people suffering with diabetes in Ireland.
Malahide Sea Scouts to help fundraise repairs and redevelopment to their current facilities so they may continue develop the lives of young people.
With just 40 days to go the lads will be doing more than just giving up chocolate for lent!
Please support then in anyway you can and catch them on Facebook.
