Neala troop with Tommy Taylor
Neala row away with the Tommy Taylor trophy

Launch day 2014 IMG_3327 (12)This had been a soft winter but also a long one. Every autumn the boats are taken out, washed and scraped down, brushed out, brought onto the boat deck and rest till it’s time to start getting ready for the next season.

This year Group Leader Robert McKernan asked Tommy Taylor a long life friend and honorary member of the group to present a trophy for the best turned out boat on launch day. At the beginning of winter each scout troop is allocated a boat to prepare for the next season. So after night after night of sanding, brushing out, repairing, caulking and finally varnishing the boats are ready for launch day.Launch day 2014 IMG_3327 (4)

On launch day two BP 18 (Sea Scout standard boat) and three east coast rowing skiffs were lifted down the slip way at the sea wall in Malahide. The decision was difficult as Tommy explained before presenting the trophy, as all the boats were so well turned out and a credit to the scouts and their leaders. Congratulations goes to Neala troop who won for their work on Stella Maris an east coast skiff ,23 foot and 9 inches long and sharp at both ends .

Many thanks to Father Peter Briscoe from Saint Sylvester’s Parish who blessed our boats and crews, to have a safe boating season in 2014.

Thank you to Moira from Scouting Ireland’s Communications Team for taking some great photos of the Launch Day 2014.
