Malahide Sea Scouts to compete in California USA International Sea Scout Regatta – Koch Cup
Two members of 9th Port (Neala Troop) travel to California next week to represent Scouting Ireland at William I Koch International Sea Scout Sailing Regatta. Sarah McKernan and Gemma McDowell are the current Irish Scout sailing champions having beaten all comers in Broadmeadows last August.
In the biennial regatta, teams from Brazil, England, Ireland, Finland, Poland, Portugal, New Zealand, South Africa and Trinidad and Tobago have earned the right to square off against their American counterparts from a dozen states in a week of competition in Flying Junior sailboats. Sarah and Gemma will also compete as part of international eight man crews onboard Catalina 37s.
The week will end on Friday, June 27, with an awards dinner at Long Beach Yacht Club, where America’s Cup winning skipper and philanthropist Bill Koch is scheduled to present the Koch Cup to the winning team.
The Koch Cup trophy is made by Garrard & Company, the same silver and jewelry experts who made the America’s Cup. The London-based company replicated the iconic design of the ornate vase-shaped pitcher with a flaring spout. It is valued at more than $100,000 and, like the America’s Cup, it has a custom suitcase and cannot be shipped commercially because of its value.
Scouting Ireland Sea Scout Commissioner, Stephen Taylor, will travel with the team along with Colum McCaffrey who has coached the team and Kate O’ Farrell.
