Scout Hiking Expedition Wicklow November 2012
Every year the Wednesday Troop runs a challenging hiking expedition to the Wicklow Mountains aimed at the younger scouts, who are helped out by the Ventures. Leader Colum McCaffrey was the leader in charge of this years expo. On Friday afternoon they set off from Malahide to the village of Roundwood. After a short hike, but made all the more difficult with everything required for the weekend, including tents and food on the backs of the scouts. A site to pitch camp for the night was found.
A freezing cold November night, the Chicken Curry for dinner was welcomed warmly. Temperatures dropped to as low as -4C overnight. We awoke to a frozen landscape, but a bright clear day. After breakfast and preparing
lunch, we struck camp and we on our way again. Re-joining the Wicklow Way, we paused to enjoy the views of Lugala and Lough Tay below. Then it was onto the railway sleepers across the boggy mountain that is White Hill. Continuing upwards to Djouce, the highest point of our trip. With a clear day we paused for some lunch to enjoy the views.
Down to the river valley below to collect some fresh water from the River Dargle to cook with later. We pushed on to a nearby forest where we set up camp amongst the trees for the second night under canvass. On Sunday we made our way home to Malahide. Well done to everyone who took part in the freezing conditions, especially the younger scouts, who were on their first expo.
