Friday Beavers plant a tree

On Friday 10th October 2014 we had an unusual Friday Beavers.  Treeday was October 9th and Alice had managed to persuade the Tree Council of Ireland to give us an Alder sapling.

Next it was up to Aoife to persuade Fingal County Council to give us permission to plant the tree in the grounds of Malahide Castle. A big thank you to the Parks department in Fingal – they not only gave us a location but have also offered to water the tree in its early years and eventually move it to somewhere in the park when it gets bigger.

So we assembled in Bridgefield Car Park at 630 and sorted the Beavers into their lodges.  Then we marched them all down to the location.  For anyone who was trying to enjoy a quiet walk in the early evening – apologies!

Once we found the location each beaver took a turn on digging duty.  Once everyone had a go some of the leaders took over to finished digging out the hole.  We then planted the little Adler and watered it liberally.  Fingers crossed it likes its new location.

By this stage it was well and truly dark and we all marched back to the den.  Many in the village will have heard us before they saw us with shouts of “We are beavers” echoing around the Diamond.

A great night was had by all!

You can talk to your Beaver about the Alder using the notes here

And don’t forget to check in our tree next time you are in Malahide Castle.  The tree is located near the Toots stop in the castle.
