Wooden Ships on Broadmeadow

Good to see that the Seamanship Challenge made a return today to the Sea Scout Sailing Regatta after an absence of 9 years. Three crews of 5 scouts ranging in age from 13 to 17 years went afloat in Scouting Ireland’s Sea Scout standard boat the BP18. The course was set, and the scout teams of 5 were put through the challenges. Working as a team under time constraint, each crew had to rig a boat, sail a course, put head to wind, and anchor, perform a man overboard drill and finish by coming alongside. To perform best ,all crews needed to  pull together well and congratulations goes to the 9^th Port Malahide (Wed.) who took first place followed by  8^u Calafort Dunlaoghaire (Manannan) in second place and 8^u Calafort Dunlaoghaire (Fodhla) in third place.

The Team Racing event was for pairs under 13, under 15 and under 17 years. Here crews of two sailed in the very popular Pico and Topaz dinghies and again the entrants pulled together as a team. Winds came from the south east and swung around from the south increasing from a force 3 to very nice pace for the boats at force 5. The day concluded with a BBQ organised by our hosts Malahide Sea Scouts.

Congratulations and thanks to the Malahide team on the day for running a very successful regatta. Newly appointed group leader Colin Lynch of Malahide also expressed his thanks to the visiting teams and to organisers headed by Colum Mc Caffrey, and assisted by Jordan Killen, Emily Carrol, Niamh Manning, Clodagh Somers, David Fox, Kevin Rowan, the BBQ crew and SI Communications team. Furthermore the day could not have run as smoothly without the officer of the day Alan Johns and First Aider David Batt who covered the first aid station. Finally to our hosts Malahide Yacht Club , Deidre and Therese who looked after our needs for the day,many thanks.

Finally the placing’s for the team racing were 1^st  place 8u Calafort Manannan (Dunlaoghaire) , 2^nd place  9^th Port Malahide(Wed.) and 3^rd place 8u Calafort Fodhla (Dunlaoghaire).
